Around this time last summer in Toronto, we decided to go on an impromptu cocoa beach hotels overnight trip to the famed Muskoka region, commonly known as "cottage country" to Ontarians. Taking cocoa beach hotels full advantage of my then- Marriott staff discount, we booked ourselves into the exceedingly comfortable all-suite, waterfront Residence Inn Gravenhurst Muskoka Wharf that's just off the main grid of the town of Gravenhurst . The drive north was about 190 kilometers or a two and a half hour leisurely highway cocoa beach hotels cruise from T.O. It was the end of summer and therefore, low season, which was good because we thankfully avoided the endless stream of tourists, campers, and city residents who have already rushed back to their renew their urban grind after a few weeks tanning, BBQ-ing, boating, fishing, hunting, and lazing around.
However, our glee (and smugness) at having avoided the madding crowd and getting the entire lake district to ourselves was a bit short-lived when we saw how deserted the place was. We're talking schlocky, B-horror movie, crickets-chirping quiet, with hardly a soul - even the local folk - in sight. It was beautiful and serene all right, but to see how still everything was, especially the lake? Gotta admit, it was a tad unnerving after awhile. But I have to say, it sure makes for really pretty pictures though.....
