McGee, who first gained fame as the winner of Season 11 of UFC's reality-TV show The Ultimate Fighter, talks openly and honestly about his struggles. He was declared clinically dead Sept. 9, 2005 after overdosing on heroin. He became addicted to painkillers. He relapsed in Las Vegas, started drinking and woke up four days later in Iowa.
"When I use, that's it. It's done. It's over," said McGee. "So that comes first. For me, I fight to carry the message to other people that struggle. I fight for the payout that I can better take care of my family."
He and his wife, Chelsea, have two sons. McGee's family is the pride of his life. It's for them that he competes in a sport that's led to nine surgeries in the past five years, why he uses his fists for a living, why he feels so much pride about his success in a sport that causes a whole lot of pain.
"The payout is that my sons will be taken care of. My wife will be taken care of. People don't like you when you're losing. So I focus on winning," he said with a grin . . .
