Courtney and I were SO excited to finally be in New Zealand! Our semester at uni was finally finished and this was the perfect trip to end it. We got picked up at the Christchurch airport in the morning and got settled into Coco at Jucy Rentals. We were especially stoked because Coco was SO much nicer than any other campa we had been in before. It was such a treat! Our trip wasn't very articulately rent a car varna planned out like some people's vacations are, but we had a few places in mind that we wanted to visit in our seven days time on the South Island. We knew we had a long drive ahead of us so on Saturday, rent a car varna we drove all the way to Mt. Cook and spent the night at the bottom of the summit at the DOC camping ground.
We went to sleep on Saturday at 9pm after eating our subway sandwiches and watching Austin Powers rent a car varna Goldmember and woke up at like 2:45 am this morning to rain and very violent windstorms. I was pretty scared we were going to get blown away because rent a car varna our campa was rocking back and forth with each strong gust of wind. The really strong gusts of wind would come periodically and weren t super strong all the time but it was pretty persistent. It was very loud and it was hard to sleep. I noticed it was pretty light outside even at three o clock in the morning! The day before, we could see the glacier and the mountains but today they were covered in the clouds. We had to get used to the sun setting at around 5:00 pm, which makes it a little more difficult to get stuff done during the daytime. We realised we really had to plan out our activities because we didn t have much time during the day. The sun doesn t rise till about 7:30 am or 7:45am. That s about 12 or 13 hours of darkness each day!!
We booked a Tasman Glacier tour today and we were lucky because this tour was supposed to be the last one of the year! The weather was also absolutely amazing, because the skies were blue and it was sunny! At first I thought I was going to need six layers of clothes, but I ended up only needing a couple because it was so sunny! We got to see heaps of icebergs and were able to taste them too!
Our tour ended in the afternoon and we left Mt.Cook to dive to Queenstown. The scenery on the drive south was very picturesque and I wanted to take pictures every five seconds! It took all afternoon to drive to Queenstown rent a car varna and we arrived there at around dinnertime. It was perfect rent a car varna because Courtney and I were dying to try these famous "Fergburgers" we kept hearing about. rent a car varna We had absolutely no idea what they were, but we knew we had to try them. We checked into the Queenstown Campervan Park and walked down to Fergburgers. We both ordered the original Fergburger and also got onion rings with the aioli sauce! Now we knew what this hype was all about because they really were freaking amazing! We imagined how great if Fergburger rent a car varna were in our hometowns, but then realized that we would probably get super fat because we would eat them ALL the time.
Last night it was about -4 degrees Celsius and it was SO cold. We shopped all morning rent a car varna and accidently parked the campa in a one hour parking area and accidentally left it there for 4 hrs. We rushed back to the van expecting a parking fine but we didn t see any on the windshield… lucky! We covered all the shops there and after a while all the souvenir stores looked the same. In the afternoon we decided to get going and continue driving toward Milford Sound.
We played country music the whole ride there and it's already growing rent a car varna on me! We got to the last campground at around 7pm and it was dark already. We got to the last campground before Milford sound (a department of conservation site), which has a box with a hole that says campground fees. We boiled water and made green tea and cooked pasta. We used our cute fold out table for the first time and it was pretty rent a car varna convenient to use! I love this campervan! First of all, it s super easy to make the bed. It has a kitchenette in the back, which is so easy to use. You just slide out the burner! It also has a sink and mini fridge that isn t under a seat. We went down to Lake Gunn to take cool light pictures with Courtney's camera. We set it to a thirty-second exposure and I wrote I heart NZ and NZ 2012 and I heart Jucy! We saw a bunch of hares as we drove off into the wilderness and realized at this point, we had no contact with the rest of the world. It was just us and our campa. We were surrounded by the most beautiful natural surroundings for miles on end. How amazing is that? We also realized that New Zealand has the safest wildlife in the world because there are no dangerous mammals or snakes or anything rent a car varna really dangerous. We read that there were a couple rent a car varna poisonous spiders that roam New Zealand, but they are pretty rare so there's really nothing to worry about. Sweet as!
We woke up early and drove us from Lake Gunn to Milford. We made minestrone soup and cappuccino for brekkie. While I was in the back cooking, these little flies called sandflies kept biting me! We were bummed because it was raining and it was cold at the sound. The visibility was poor at the sound (which is really a fiord). We were 25 min before the next Jucy cruise, rent a car varna so we sprinted to the harbour centre! We made it just in time and we got a great deal on JUCY Cruize ! The trip was an hour and a half total an it was insane!! We saw a billion waterfalls streaming down the mountains! We were two of only 6 people on the whole cruise so it felt like a private cruise ship! We saw this huge waterfall of raaaging water! It was awe amazing to see all of it at once. Courtney and I decided to tough it out and face the rain at the front of the cruise ship. It was crazy windy and her five dollar poncho ripped from the crazy winds. There was also the narrowest part of the fiord and they said winds can reach 160 mph there and it was sooooo windy we had to hide under the railing so we wouldn t blow away! We also saw juvenile male seals lying on rocks! We got up to them reeeal close and it was so cool! We also passed rent a car varna by this huge waterfall and we put ourselves rent a car varna at the closest part so we could get sprayed!! Good thing I had a waterproof camera! The water in the fiord was the darkest water I have ever seen. Our feet were wet from being out in the rain half the time. We left Milford Sound at around 1:30 pm. Our drive back was amaaaazing! rent a car varna So many cascading waterfalls finding their own pathways down the mountain. We drove to Te Anau and went to the Laundromat to dry our soaked clothes. We went to the sport fishing and hunting store and Courtney got wool socks and a real poncho that also could be a tent. We went grocery shopping and got sausages lettuce eggs and snacks for dinner and filled up with gas.
Before we left Te Anau we decided to use our wifi to check for places to stay. It took about an hour and a half driving in the darkness so I had to use my high beams. It started rent a car varna snowing rent a car varna and it was slush!! Cool but it felt like I was in a video game. I hadn t driven in snow before but it was mostly slush for a while. We could see the snow-hail on the side of the road! We passed the town of Athol, the name which we thought was pretty funny. We got to Kingston rent a car varna town at around rent a car varna 7:30 pm and we cooked sausages rent a car varna French bread and salad and tomato soup for dinner. This was the nicest place by far and it was so cute they had all the dishes and appliances! We definitely rent a car varna recommend it. It is the only place in Kingston so you can't miss it. It was snowing outside so I hope it s snowy tomorrow and we can snowboard!
We woke up to frost on everything rent a car varna in Kingston town!! We tried to drive the 12km road up to the Remarkables and there was heaps of fresh powder! However we didn t quite make it up a steep part (past 6km) without chains. We took Jucy pictures out over the crazy landscape we saw.
After getting back into Queenstown we sat in the car and Courtney rent a car varna took a nap while I made eggs for breakfast. We made it to the 11am conservatory show at the Kiwi Birdlife Park. We took a million pictures of the kiwis! They are nocturnal so the kiwi house was really dark! There are several species of kiwis, and some species only have 300 left in the world. We paid $29.90 USD for a $38 NZ admission ticket and were astounded at the great exchange rate! All of a sudden shopping sounded reaaaally good to us! After the kiwi park, we shopped more and got chai lattes at Starbucks. I got a belt, and some other goodies. We went to the A.J. Hackett place at around 3:30 pm and decided rent a car varna what crazy adventure rent a car varna we wanted to do. There were a lot to choose from and the Nevis Swing sounded awesome since it was the highest/biggest in the world, so we chose that. We got to the car, did some Internet stuff, Skyped our friends Felix and Maile from back in Sydney, and Courtney took another nap. They told us about the storm and bad weather in back in Sydney and made us happy we weren't there. After our little break we went to the Minus Five Degree Ice Bar for some super cool drinks. For dinner we had Indian and then drove to our next camp for the night.
We woke up this morning at a DOC just outside of Queenstown however being that we spent all our cash we had to charge the $14 fee to a card (the woman was not a pleasant person and tried to fine us … Note: always make sure you have cash for these people).
After that little ordeal we rushed back to Queenstown to make our 8:50am appointment for the Nevis Swing! We parked across from the Kiwi Birdlife Park and literally ran to the A.J. Hackett 'h
